Educational Media and Technology

Week 9: Teacher Resources

Think of the virtual teacher's lounge--where teachers gather to relax, receive information, and share ideas on teaching and their profession. Faculty prep meetings and inservice are a fact of a teacher's life. Journals, magazines, and professional organizations for educators are available for any and all approaches to teaching. The world wide reach of the Internet has allowed the proliferation of resources for teachers that are easy to locate, simple to use, and represent a faculty room in cyberspace.

The Internet has also made it possible for teachers to communicate individually with one another, through bulletin boards and chat rooms, as well as to collaborate on projects with entire classrooms. The following links show the wide range of electronic journals, resources, and professional organizations available to teachers.

Focus Questions

  1. What factors may determine whether a teacher uses technology resources in the classroom? Are these resources valuable or optional?
  2. What, in your opinion, are the most important technology competencies that a teacher should have?

Final Paper (Due the week following November 29th)

Research and/or develop a project that examines or uses a particular technology in an educational situation. You might evaluate a technology or application that is of particular personal interest to you or that you would like to use in the future. You might be interested in organizing some sort of technology inservice training, and discuss what types of workshops you would include for other teachers. You could also look into the needs of your educational organization and consider what resources and planning, including the input and training of those who will use the technology, would be needed to upgrade or implement the technology plan.

The project can be in the form of a paper, 750-1000 words, or a website. Include any references, including web links and outside experts, that you use.
