Week 5: Elementary Education

One of a teacher's continual tasks is the development of instructional activities, and the writing of behavioral objectives. A teacher must take into consideration the lesson content as well as students' developmental levels, learning styles, gender, cultural background, socioeconomic status, special needs, motivations, and existing knowledge and skills. Instructional design involves the specifying of the behavior to be performed, the conditions under which it will be performed, and how well the student did in performing the behavior, measured through some type of evaluation or assessment.

Lesson objectives are often based on curriculum guides and textbooks, and it is not unusual to find teachers who use the same lesson plans from year to year without variation. A school's investment in expensive textbooks usually means that they will be used for years as well. Meanwhile, the World Wide Web provides a resource that is immediate, current, and changing. This can create a challenge for a teacher who wants to keep up with the explosion of information available, to be able to judge the value of information in a given website, and to be able to adapt material to an established curriculum.

Focus Questions:

1. How might you use some of the following websites in instructional design for your classroom?
2. How might you use some of the following websites for use by students on Internet computers?
3. How can we evaluate Internet sites for sources of information and reliability?
4. How can we teach students to consider information source and reliability when using the Internet?

Assignments:

Reading for Week 5

Read the following two articles:

which discuss the reliability of information sources on the World Wide Web. Post your comments on how you think a site can be evaluated as a reliable source of information.

Blackboard.com Assignment (Undergraduate and Graduate)

At our regular meeting at OHS, we will post information at the Blackboard.com site so you can see how it is done. Please bring any documents on a disk, pictures, etc. you would like to use on your page.

Graduate Assignment

Email to me the three types of media and methods for the lesson plans you would like to present. Refer to the syllabus for ideas. You might choose to make flash cards using graphics software, for example, or interactive math web sites for drill instruction, or use a digital camera or scanner to make a class storybook. If you are already prepared with a lesson, we can plan on you giving your lessons to the class during the 7th or 9th week.
