Week 6 - Design Guides: Principles of Web Site Design
As you refine your web page, you may be paying more attention to how other web designers arrange and organize information for better accessibility and usability. A number of good guides are available to web designers that give advice on visual appeal, page and site organization, and navigation.
WEB PAGE DESIGN SHORT GUIDE
- One: Write clearly and be brief.Put the most important information near the top of the document.Include the title of your page, the purpose of your page, any indices, and when your page was last updated
- Two: Organize your documents for quick visual scanning by using headlines to summarize topics, and by using lists.
- Three: Don't overload your web page with graphics, they take to long to load.
- Four: Don't put too much stuff on one page. If a page is getting large, split it into sections.
- Five: If your web page contains more than one document, make sure it is easy to navigate. You can do this by putting a table of contents at the beginning or end of each document. Another way is by using frames.
- Six: Avoid BLINKING TEXT. It attracts attention, but it is very annoying. There are better ways to emphasize text, like BOLD and ITALICS
- Seven: Be sure to provide your e-mail address in a hypertext and/or graphical link. This will enable people to get back to you with comments and suggestions on how to improve your page.
- Eight: Try to make your site accessible to as many people as possible, including those with text-based browsers and slow modem connections. The best way to learn how is by visiting Accessible HTML Guidelines.
- Nine: Review your site often to see if you have maintained consistency. Have other (fresh eyes) review for you.
- Ten: Make sure everything works the way it should and test for validity.
