Educational Technology

This course serves as an introduction to the current applications of telecommunications, applications software, and other media associated with the elementary classroom. It may be taken for one credit through Eastern Oregon University.

Course Outcomes:

  1. Demonstrate a sound understanding of technology operations and concepts
  2. Use technology resources to collect and analyze data, interpret results and communicate findings to improve instructional practice.
  3. Model and teach ethical practice related to technology use
  4. Apply technology resources to enable and empower learners with diverse backgrounds, characteristics, and abilities
  5. Apply technology to maximize student learning
  6. Plan and design learning engagements using technology


The instructor for this course is Patty Kennington.  I am the technology coordinator and a teacher of computer graphics and web design at Ontario High School.

Course Activities

Students in this course will meet as a class three times. Assignments and project work may be submitted during class or through email. The instructor will be available at the Ontario High School computer lab at times to be agreed upon by class members for work on projects. Students may complete projects on their own if desired.


Assignments:

  1. Technology Concepts, Diversity, and Ethics - First class meeting. Discuss technology use in the classroom, its effects on learning and on diverse student populations, and how the use of technology involves ethical issues. Assignment: 4 short answers on issues discussed.
  2. Critical Literacy - Second class meeting. Explain how you will help students understand the importance of critically evaluating what is on the web. How will you help students develop a discriminating eye when they are surfing the internet? Assignment: Locate the websites for five professional organizations in different disciplines. Write a paragraph summary of each, describing the resources they provide for teachers.
  3. Brochure - Project. Create a tri-fold brochure for parents that includes text and clip art. Describe your literacy program in your classroom through the brochure. What would parents expect to see in your room relative to reading and writing?
  4. Table - Project. Create a table. Use data appropriate to an elementary classroom, such as your weekly schedule. The table should include: Shading, merged cells, and at least one column with a different width.
  5. Graph - Project. Create data sets appropriate to an elementary classroom, such as individual student learning gains. Create a graph (bar, line, circle) to illustrate this data. Provide a key.
  6. Power Point - Project. Create a PowerPoint slide show. Include at least eight slides. Use the slides to teach a lesson on some topic appropriate to K-3 students. Be prepared to share the slide show during the final class.
  7. Digital Camera - Project. Take a picture with the digital camera. Import it into one of the documents above.
  8. "Webbing" - Project. Use either "kidspiration," "Inspiration," or the drawing program in Microsoft Word to create a semantic web.
  9. Exemplars from the Classroom - To be turned in by the 3rd and final class meeting. Assignment: Write a one-page description of the uses of technology you have observed. What great things are being done with technology by classroom teachers?

This is a pass/fail course. All assignments for Educational Technology will be evaluated using a "not Met," "In Progress," and "Met" criteria-based rubric. All assignments receiving "Not Met" or "In Progress" require revisions until a mark of "Met" is achieved. You may have until the last class to turn your assignments in.
