Welcome to Educational Media and Technology! This course serves as an introduction to the current state of educational computing and the use of technology in instruction and learning. The course may be taken for undergraduate or graduate credit through Eastern Oregon University.
At the end of 10 weeks, students will:
- Gain familiarity with various technologies commonly used for learning, including theories and practices affecting educational technology
- Select and evaluate hardware and software for instructional applications
- Be able to develop educational technology activities in an organizational setting
- Be able to plan for organizational technology needs
This class will meet a minimum of five times, and more as necessary. Assignments can be submitted through email or by posting a web page and providing a web address. Some classes will be entirely online, making it easier for students who are unable to attend each week, and we will attempt several bulletin board discussions. Weekly lessons will include content information, focus questions, projects and written assignments, and Internet references. Please do not get bogged down in trying to look up every single website! I have included plenty of Internet references but don't feel you have to do justice to every one of them. Follow your interests.
I hope you enjoy this kind of learning!
The instructor for this course is Patty Kennington. For some information about myself, my family and I live on a dairy farm in Eastern Oregon, along the Snake River bordering Idaho. I have been a resident of Ontario, Oregon for 27 years. My husband Clint and I have 5 children and one adorable granddaughter, who is living with her parents in St. Louis! I enjoy gardening, music, computers, and reading. I am teaching high school computer classes part time at Ontario High School, and I enjoy teaching classes for Eastern Oregon University. I received a Secondary Teaching Certificate from Brigham Young University and completed a graduate degree in Educational Technology online through The George Washington University in Washington, D.C.

Undergraduate and Graduate Assignments
Three projects will be due:
- Due by the end of the 4th week: A one-page discussion of an interview with a person who uses a particular technology for a particular audience (related to your own interests). Preferably the interview subject can demonstrate the technology in use.
- Due by the end of the 6th week: A two-page review of educational software or website, including a look at accessibility, navigation, multimedia components, content, and target audience.
- Due by the end of the 10th week: Research and/or develop a project that examines or uses a particular technology in an educational situation. You might evaluate a technology or application that is of particular personal interest to you or that you would like to use in the future. You might be interested in organizing some sort of technology inservice training, and discuss what types of workshops you would include for other teachers. You could also look into the needs of your educational organization and consider what resources and planning, including the input of those who will use the technology, would be needed to upgrade or implement the technology plan.
The project can be in the form of a paper, 750-1000 words, or a website.
Graduate Assignments
Choose from the following instructional methods and media (in any combination, but without repetition) to plan and implement three age-specific lessons in your classroom:
Method
Media
Cooperative Scanner Discovery Digital Camera Problem Solving Video Camera Games Word Processing Simulation Discussion Spreadsheet Drill & Practice Drill Software/site Tutorial Multimedia Software Demonstration Graphics Software Presentation Presentation Software Research Web site Assessment Assessment Software/site Evaluation Color Printer Synthesis Web Site Generator
The assignment will include the lesson plan and a 2-page reflection on the activity, due at the end of the 5th, 7th and 9th weeks of the course. The reflection should evaluate the activity in terms of
- how well the activity was planned and implemented
- how well the technology component worked into the lesson
- how students benefited from the activity
- how the activity might be improved
