In the example above left, the graduate was photographed against a background including people walking around. It's hard to see his face. So we select the marquee tool (the dotted square top left in the toolbar), make a box around what we want to keep, and then we use Image>Crop.

In the example below, a crooked scan can be corrected by rotating and then by cropping using the marquee.
