The Multimedia Classroom: Computer Technologies for Learning

Week 2: Overview of Available Technologies; Grade-Level Appropriateness

Most educational organizations are making the effort to teach student computer technology competencies by providing computer labs complete with Internet connections and widely-used software applications. Computer networks are common on most campuses, along with their attendant costs and technical problems. The ability of teachers to attend to their own equipment, troubleshoot problems and assess and utilize software and Internet sites greatly decreases the organization's need to provide technical support. Teachers who have not received technology training are often overwhelmed by the added learning curve and the need to deal with new equipment on top of their other teaching tasks.

To assist teachers in the teaching of computer technologies, most states have established guidelines for teachers and students in grade level competencies. These competencies generally have to do with basic computer functions and common applications, such as word processing, database, and spreadsheet use, as well as the ability to use the Internet in research and email. Teachers should have at least working knowledge of these basic abilities. As students become more comfortable with using these technologies, it sometimes takes an effort for teachers to keep up with and provide guidance in using them.

Focus Questions

    1. What kind of computer labs and equipment are available in your school, classroom, or place of work?
    2. How many computers are available to what number of users? Are these computers networked?
    3. What is your assessment of students' use of and familiarity with computers?
    4. List some issues related to young learners.
    5. What do you consider basic computer competencies for students?
