Introduction to Digital Cameras

E. Do you want to zoom in and out?
_____ 1. It is not important to me to have a zoom
_____ 2. I want my camera to have zoom capacity, whether it is optical or digital
_____ 3. I want to zoom in as closely as possible

Optical and Digital Zoom

Be aware of the differences between optical and digital zoom .Optical zoom uses an actual mechanism to move the lens into and away from the camera. This is the same as changing focal length , as in a film camera. Optical zoom will add to the cost of a camera.

Most cameras in the 2-5 MP range will have a 3x optical zoom. Olympus , Fuji and Pentax all have high optical-zoom camera lines.Digital zoom frames a smaller portion of the scene, similar to cropping, by using less of the light sensors inside the camera to record the photo you are taking. This will result in a photo smaller than usual, or with less resolution and sharpness.

You can accomplish the same effect by taking a picture without the zoom and later cropping it using photo editing software.
