Printing & Printers

Printing your digital photos

I am thinking of buying a new printer. How does a photo printer differ from other types of printers? What about dye-sublimation and Pict-Bridge technology?

Do high-quality papers and ink cartridges really make a difference ? How long will my pictures last?

How do I set up my printer for quality photo printing printing, or options like borderless prints and contact sheets?

What are other options for printing my photos?

Taking pictures with your printer in mind It's important to shoot with the camera's highest resolution whenever possible. You can always make a smaller copy of a picture to e-mail, but it is nearly impossible to enlarge a picture without losing quality. Bigger Isn't Always Better!

With that said, a too-large digital image may not give you good results when you print, simply because a photo printer may not be able to handle a resolution above 300 dpi (dots per inch.) Unless it is scaled down, such a picture may contain strange artifacts. Higher resolution than this may be difficult to detect with the naked eye anyway. So printing with a dpi of between 200-300 will most likely give you very satisfactory results.
