Editing Photos

Simple Photo Editing

After you've taken your digital photos, organized and catalogued them, you must decide what your purpose is :

Print snapshots or enlargements, collage or panorama
Import into a document, album or presentation
Upload to a online gallery, web page or email to friends
Make a computer slideshow

These are the basic photo editing tasks: (follow links for more information:)

  • Crop & Resize - make a box around what you want to keep; crop out extra background and zero in on your subject. Resize dimensions and resolution, usually to decrease size for web photos.
  • Brightness and Contrast - Use sliders or Levels histogram
  • Color Correction - Different programs handle this in different ways, from auto-correct to Red, Green and Blue sliders to Curve and Levels histograms
  • Apply filters such as the Unsharp Mask and Sharpen.

Remember, always keep a copy of your original picture! Some software programs will keep a copy of the original and rename the edited photo.

New digital cameras generally supply download drivers and some sort of simple photo editing software CD bundle. If you don't have any photo editing software already, you can give the bundled edition a try.

With photo editing and retouching programs you can also do the following:

        • Apply edges
        • Add text
        • Combine pictures in collages
        • Stitch together panoramas

There are dozens of easily available photo editing programs, among them:
